*** IRTA-Cal at University of California Davis campus

Structured and developed a program to facilitate joint research and development projects in Ag Biotech and Food Technologies between IRTA, Catalonia (Spain) and UC Davis, California (USA).

The planing, project proposal and start of IRTA-Cal, a collaboration program between the Institut de Recerca i Tecnologia Agroalimentaries (IRTA) of the Department of Agriculture, Barcelona (Spain) and the Division of Agricultural and Natural Resources (ANR) of the University of California. Hosted at Prof. George Bruening Laboratory in the Plant Pathology Department at UC Davis..

* IRTA-Cal / UNIVERSITY RELATIONS

Olive Varieties Introductions

Developed and managed collaborations between IRTA and Foundation Plant Services at UC Davis to introduce and evaluate IRTA's olive varieties germplasm of interest to modern olive oil production systems.

Developed and facilitated IRTA relationships with UC Davis Olive Center in olive cultivation and olive oil production and quality evaluations.

Developed and managed IRTA relationships with PIPRA at UC Davis.

Research collaborations on genetic transformation and plant tissue culture with Parson's Foundation Tissue Culture Facility at UC Davis.

* IRTA-UCD JOINT RESEARCH PROJECTS

– Metabolic engineering of carotenoid pigment composition in fruits

In collaboration with the Tissue Culture and Plant Transformation Facility at UCD we developed an efficient protocol for transforming pepper with Agrobacterium.

In collaboration with IRTA in Spain we developed transformation vectors and genetic tools to engineer carotenoid metabolism in vegetable fruits.

Pepper Fruit Improvement

Use of mutagenesis and targeted selection (TILLING) to obtain pepper (Capsicum annuum) mutants producing fruits with desirable properties in shelf life and micronutrient content.

– Cucumber Vein Yellowing Virus

The components for an ELISA test for the CVYV virus were developed to facilitate the detection of the CVYV virus that all but decimated the production of cucumbers in South Eastern Spain in 2001-2002.

* SPAIN/USA INDUSTRY RELATIONS

Identified California and USA companies of interest to IRTA's ongoing research and development projects, established contacts and collaborations between California AgBiotech companies and Spanish companies and IRTA associates in these areas:

– Seed Industry

– Plant Nurseries

– Food Ingredients Industry

– Food Certification Industry

– Biotech Industry

– Plant Varieties Introductions

Developed partnerships between IRTA and California Nurseries to distribute in California IRTA’s germplasm of interest to Olive Oil Production.
